Registration

What are the requirements for social workers to be registered?

All qualified social workers should be registered. The title "social worker" has been protected by law in England since 1 April 2005. This law came from the Care Standards Act 2000 to ensure that only those who are properly qualified, registered and accountable for their work describe themselves as social workers.

Registration of social workers by the General Social Care Council was introduced 1st April 2003 and for social work students from September 2004. Applicants for registration will have to demonstrate that they have completed the required social work training, and also that they meet requirements about conduct, health and competence.

Registered social workers are also required to complete post-registration training and learning activities before renewing their registration every three years.
