Click the option below which best describes your current situation.

A high proportion of social workers come to the job as a second or third career. Your previous experience will be valued and may be considered in place of formal academic qualifications when considering your eligibility to join a degree course. However, the university will need to know that you will be able to cope with the level of study involved and may require evidence of recent study.

If you have not studied for a while, you could consider an Access course at a local college or relevant modules offered by the Open University.  It’s always advisable to check with individual universities what qualifications they are willing to accept as entry requirements vary.

Because career-changers may be older and have family responsibilities, it can be challenging to survive financially while following the course. However, since September 2003, students studying for the degree qualification will be eligible for an annual bursary. The non means tested bursary is in addition to any higher education funding you may be entitled to.
